Slow mornings: my 7am without a phone

I moved my charger to the kitchen and accidentally rebuilt my whole morning. Here’s what an hour looks like when it doesn’t start with a feed.

Slow mornings: my 7am without a phone

This started as a dare to myself: charge the phone in the kitchen, buy a $12 alarm clock, and see what happens for one week. That was eight months ago.

The first fifteen minutes belong to this mug.

What the hour actually looks like

  1. Kettle on, blinds up, one big glass of water
  2. Coffee, made slowly, drunk by the window doing absolutely nothing
  3. Twenty minutes of reading — paper book, one chapter
  4. Index card from last night: read it, pick where to start

What changed

The surprising part wasn’t focus or productivity. It’s that the day stopped starting with other people’s emergencies. By the time I see a notification, I’ve already had an hour that belonged entirely to me.

You don’t need a longer morning. You need a morning that isn’t rented out to everyone else.

Fair warning: the first three days feel genuinely weird, like you forgot something important. You didn’t. Push through to day four.
