Everyone talks about the 5-to-9 before your 9-to-5. Honestly? Mine fell apart every single time I tried it. The version that finally stuck is the one after work — and it has exactly four steps.
Step one: the ten-minute reset
The second I get home I set a timer for ten minutes and put things back where they live. Not cleaning — resetting. Dishes in the machine, jacket on the hook, desk cleared. When the timer rings, I stop, even mid-task.
Step two: dinner I decided on Sunday
Deciding what to eat at 6:40pm while hungry is how takeout happens. I pick three dinners on Sunday and rotate them. It is boring and it works.
Step three: one screen, on purpose
I gave up on "no screens after 8". Instead I pick one thing — an episode, a video essay, twenty minutes of a game — and do just that, on purpose, instead of drifting between three feeds.
Step four: tomorrow, on paper
Before bed I write tomorrow’s top three tasks on an index card and leave it on my keyboard. Morning me starts the day with a decision already made.
A routine you can do on your worst day is worth ten routines designed for your best one.
That’s it. No cold plunge, no journaling protocol, no supplements. Four steps, most nights, and the week just… holds.
